This course will cover what weather related losses can be expensed (e.g. buildings, plant and improvements) and what cyclone based tax reliefs are or will be available for employers and in respect of windfall taxable income.

It will be example driven.
The term severe weather refers to the three recent severe weather events in the North Island – the two cyclones and the Auckland anniversary heavy rain.

Upon satisfactory completion of this activity you will be:                                                     
• Aware of the multitude of the primary sector tax issues that the severe weather caused.                                        
• Able to advise clients on tax effective solutions to address windfall tax profits caused by the insurance claims etc (e.g. depreciation recovered) and grants received.                                        
• Aware of the one-off employer tax reliefs.

Jim Gordon FCA was an IRD policy adviser was heavily involved in the tax response to the Christchurch earthquakes. He is also a primary sector tax expert. Accordingly, Jim brings a wide range of both theoretical and practical experience to this presentation.
